Sometimes the most successful design decisions come from scaling things back.

When a Portland-based designer approached us about incorporating our Dunes Fire Table into a residential project, the concept was already clear: create intimate moments of warmth within a modern Northwest landscape. The home featured several outdoor gathering spaces—quiet architectural nooks tucked beneath mature trees and framed by dark cladding and warm interior light.

The designer was drawn to the Dunes Fire Table, but the standard scale felt slightly oversized for the atmosphere she wanted to create. Rather than filling the space, the goal was to shape it.

So we collaborated with her to produce two custom, smaller-scale Dunes fire tables, designed specifically for the proportions of the project.

Placed within two distinct outdoor pockets of the home, the fire tables create intimate focal
points that feel more like a modern interpretation of a bonfire than a traditional fire pit. Even
though the patios could have accommodated larger pieces, the restrained scale encourages
closer gatherings and a more personal relationship with the fire.

At dusk, the warm glow of the flames reflects off the home’s dark exterior and surrounding landscape, transforming the outdoor spaces into quiet destinations for conversation and
connection.
